The time of year is coming when we eat excessively and make the decision that the new year will be different.

Have you made yourself promises in the past that this January 1st will be different? That this will be the year that you reach your goal weight? I know I did—many times. Then, as the new diet sets in, you find yourself making excuses, and finding reasons why you need to eat that certain food. How many times has that plan gone awry?

As long as we feel that all we need is a good diet and some willpower, we do not understand the nature of food addiction. We would have been able to stop eating compulsively long ago if the answer was just willpower and diet.

I’ve found that breaking an addiction brought freedom that is sweeter than any kind of sugar you can imagine.

I mistakenly thought eating whatever I wanted was freedom. I repeatedly fell into the hole of moderation. Trying to be a “normal” eater. My education and experience working with clients and working through my own addiction has taught me that the physiology and psychology of food addiction is very complex. Now I know that having self-discipline and control over food and no longer white-knuckling throughout the day brings me a sense of freedom and peace far greater.

You have to recognize that you cannot change yourself on your own. We have to make a decision to let help into our lives. We have to recognize that the help from others who have overcome addiction is essential in overcoming our own. We need a new perspective. We have to be ready to try something different, something that changes our belief system. It is possible to live differently.

If you are reading this then you are lucky enough to know that it’s possible to change and recover from addiction. We call it recovery because with it, you recover the person you were intended to be.

Give yourself the gift of recovery this year. Break your food addiction, you are worth it.
